What the Data Actually Shows

That combination is the key to reading this correctly. Authority was not the problem. Relevance was not the problem. The content was being surfaced, referenced, and consumed. The second title specifies the audience, names the real problem, and signals a point of view. It earns a click from the right user and loses one from the wrong user — which is exactly the outcome you want when engagement rate matters as much as raw traffic.
2. Expand Coverage — Not Just Improve What Exists
118 citations from 45 pages is efficient. It also reveals a ceiling. The same pages are being reused across queries because there is no new surface area to pull from. If impressions are the ceiling on traffic, and impressions are limited by content coverage, the growth path is obvious: more pages, not better pages.
Generic topic pages — the kind that can be researched and written by anyone with access to the same sources — have diminishing returns in the current environment. They compete directly with AI-generated answers on precisely the kind of information AI handles well: consensus knowledge, definitions, process summaries.
The pages that create new impression volume without colliding with AI answers are pages rooted in specificity: a real scenario the user is navigating, not a topic they searched; a decision the user is about to make, with the variables they are actually weighing; an experience or outcome that requires direct knowledge to describe accurately. These pages surface for queries that cannot be answered from aggregated consensus — because the answer depends on specifics the AI does not have.
3. Restructure Content for AI Extraction
The 118 citations this account generated did not happen by accident. The content was structured in a way that made it extractable. AI systems do not retrieve pages — they retrieve answers within pages. Content that produces citations tends to share a common structure: a real question in the heading, a direct answer in the first paragraph, and the supporting reasoning that follows.
Content that buries the answer, or that contextualises before it delivers, tends not to get cited — even when it is substantively better. This is not a formatting preference. It is retrieval compatibility. Applied consistently, this structure serves two audiences simultaneously: users who want to read and AI systems that want to extract.
